Summary

Is Mr。 Heathcliff a man? If so, is he mad? And if not, is he a devil?

Set on the bleak moors of Yorkshire, Lockwood is forced to seek shelter at Wuthering Heights, the home of his new landlord, Heathcliff。 The intense and wildly passionate Heathcliff tells the story of his life, his all-consuming love for Catherine Earnshaw and the doomed outcome of that relationship, leading to his revenge。 Poetic, complex and grand in its scope, Emily Brontë's masterpiece is considered one of the most unique gothic novels of its time。

Probably 3。5/3。75。 At first I found the book quite confusing because the main characters are so unlikable, almost evil。 Thinking about the whole story now I can see how it could be perceived as romantic but this is a rather dark novel。 Overall, I did enjoy it and was quite satisfied with the ending。

Soooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo boring!!! Holy fuck!!! Nothing happens!! The plot never thickens it just swills around itself!! Everyone sucks at communication, they're all committed fully to their own suffering, it's like being in a house full of junkies except you're willfully reading it instead - why?!?!?! Why did I subject myself to that???There was a few okay passages tho that describe pretty poetically the disgusting gravity a toxic love affair can hold over one。It took Soooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo boring!!! i think i started with a perception of this book which is barely recognizable in context of wuthering heights。 i thought this was a gothic love story, a story of angst。 but it is not。 i have not been very open minded about the book, which gave me a hard time recognizing (and even reading) the Bronte's exceptional feat。 the book is named after the house of wuthering heights, which is an indifferent, dreadful nightmare land, and hence the story isn't about love but about the life inside the house。 i think i started with a perception of this book which is barely recognizable in context of wuthering heights。 i thought this was a gothic love story, a story of angst。 but it is not。 i have not been very open minded about the book, which gave me a hard time recognizing (and even reading) the Bronte's exceptional feat。 the book is named after the house of wuthering heights, which is an indifferent, dreadful nightmare land, and hence the story isn't about love but about the life inside the house。i will re-read it once i'm older。 i am only 16 it's so soul sucking。 i wish I didn't think about it but I can't help but think about itMr。 Lockwood correctly refers to the residents of Wuthering Heights repeatedly as "inmates"。 Wuthering Heights is truly hell。 I loved the ending! 。。。more

At first, I had a hard time continuing with this book after being appalled with Heathcliff’s character。 So, I put it aside for awhile discouraged to read on。 However, I am extremely glad to have picked it back up and finished it。 The unusual setting, the characters, and the intensity and passion of the story was so different from what I was used to reading。 The tragic longing to be with the ones they loved even in death was so poisonous and obsessive, yet so captivating。 Brontë is brilliant in h At first, I had a hard time continuing with this book after being appalled with Heathcliff’s character。 So, I put it aside for awhile discouraged to read on。 However, I am extremely glad to have picked it back up and finished it。 The unusual setting, the characters, and the intensity and passion of the story was so different from what I was used to reading。 The tragic longing to be with the ones they loved even in death was so poisonous and obsessive, yet so captivating。 Brontë is brilliant in her detailed description of feelings which really allowed a reader to sympathise with each character。 I have grown to love this work and appreciate every single character large and small, faults and all。 Even Heathcliff, I have grown to understand。 His story is so sad and tragic and he is definitely a product of mistreatment and injustice。 It is hard to hate him for longing to be with the one he loved, yet was so unjustly barred。So wonderfully emotional and heartbreaking。 。。。more

I’ve only just finished this book for the first time so I won’t say much; it deserves a re-read in a few months so I can really grasp the beauty of this story。It’s one of those books that, once finished, have you wondering if you’ll ever read another book again; after all, what’s the point? On the surface it’s a story of horrible events: death, deceit, plotting, cursing, haunting, revenge, sickness。 And indeed it has all these things, but between them, in the small spaces between each word, there’s love。 Passionate, consuming love。 The sort of love that damages everything around it。 And Brontë delivers it masterfully。 To me this is Exhibit A of what makes a great author, as opposed to a good one。 A good author can write characters we hate and characters we love; characters we support and characters we hope to fail。 But great authors - a group in which Emily Brontë has found a place - can write characters we love to hate, and hate to love。 Catherine and Heathcliff are two people who, despite their wretchedness, I adore。 。。。more

Was will Emily mir sagen? I've never read anything like this before, but it being a classic it felt like something I should make time for。 It took a while for me to get into it, due to the language used, but upon finishing it I'm left with an awed feeling, I actually really enjoyed it! I've read Charlotte and Anne Bronte's works several times, but I've tried reading Wuthering Heights either 2 or 3 times previous and just couldn't get into it。 I did finally finish the book this time。 To say that I enjoyed such an intense, brooding, violent book would be overstating it, but I readily admit being sucked in to the maelstrom, against my will。 Which was somewhat surprising, as there really isn't a redeeming character in the book。 My biggest frustration was the narrative style。 Not o I've read Charlotte and Anne Bronte's works several times, but I've tried reading Wuthering Heights either 2 or 3 times previous and just couldn't get into it。 I did finally finish the book this time。 To say that I enjoyed such an intense, brooding, violent book would be overstating it, but I readily admit being sucked in to the maelstrom, against my will。 Which was somewhat surprising, as there really isn't a redeeming character in the book。 My biggest frustration was the narrative style。 Not only did it make it harder to get in the book in the beginning (it took me 4 tries!), but Nelly is a suspect narrator。 Since she has her own role to play in the insanity, one has to question her motives as she tells the story。 。。。more

It took me what seemed like forever to finish listening to this book。 It was indeed a masterpiece but dang, so very long。 I am not sure I “enjoyed” it—it was dark and sad。 A story of love and ultimate revenge, Wuthering Heights certainly will stick with me。Heathcliff and Catherine grow up together and love each other deeply but she marries someone else and regrets it。 He takes revenge on everyone in his life for the way he was treated growing up, including Catherine’s daughter, and relatives of It took me what seemed like forever to finish listening to this book。 It was indeed a masterpiece but dang, so very long。 I am not sure I “enjoyed” it—it was dark and sad。 A story of love and ultimate revenge, Wuthering Heights certainly will stick with me。Heathcliff and Catherine grow up together and love each other deeply but she marries someone else and regrets it。 He takes revenge on everyone in his life for the way he was treated growing up, including Catherine’s daughter, and relatives of her husband。 So much love, yet so much hatred。 Crazy and no one could talk sense into anyone。The best part of listening to this book was the narrator, Downton Abbey’s Anna Smith (Joanne Froggatt)。 She is amazing, especially with the incomprehensible whacky-talk of a few of the country men。 Confession--I had to refer to the text of the actual book to read passages and chapters after listening because I got confused, especially in the first third of the book。 。。。more

This was a long overdue reread for me。 It has been years since I visited this world and I am so glad I did。 The world is very dark and the characters are unremarkable and brooding which is befitting the desolate location they live in。 Haunting atmosphere as well as the characters。 I feel like this was exactly how it was growing up in that area。 Lonely and Dark。 I definitely recommend this classic。 I feel it correctly represents the country side living centuries ago。

Of all the Bronte sister books THIS is my favorite。 True, it is a bit rough around the edges and the dialect makes reading rather cumbersome but once you get through a few chapters you will become enraptured by the dark content。
